Emmanuel Kunde is deceased. The Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) confirmed the former football player’s passing in a statement issued on May 16. “His death is a huge loss for Cameroonian football. Fecafoot joins the national football community in offering its most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends,” the statement reads.
FECAFOOT also announced that its president, Samuel Eto’o Fils, promised to honor Kunde’s memory. CRTV reported that Kunde “succumbed to an illness that had been eating away at him for some time.”
Emmanuel Kunde, 68, was a well-known figure in Cameroon. He played as a defender for Canon de Yaoundé and the Indomitable Lions. Kunde was part of the team that stunned the world at the 1990 World Cup in Italy by becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup’s quarter-finals. Before that, Kunde helped Cameroon win the African Cup of Nations in 1984 in Côte d’Ivoire.
Kunde’s career in Europe was modest. He played for Stade Levallois and Reims. Then, he returned to Cameroon to finish his career with Olympique de Mvolyé, a club known for signing top Cameroonian players.
