INTERVIEW - Fashion Designer, Haythem Bouhamed

FacebookTwitterBlogger
UZURITell us how it all started – how does a young Tunisian boy become the up-and-coming fashion designer in Kuwait? HaythamAs a child I was attracted to images and colors, my father was an architectural gardener and I often used to travel with him so it was natural for me to fall in love with a world full of flowers. I found the colors and shapes so beautiful, painting and design naturally became part of my childhood.

As a teenager I knew that I really just wanted to be a fashion designer. When I turned sixteen, I left school and for the next four years I studied with the famous Tunisian painter Adel Magdich who became my teacher and who inspired me to look for the opportunity to advance in my career

Where do you draw your inspiration?

Haytham
Oh across the spectrum - from movies, to art, to music. I find inspiration walking in the streets or admiring the beautiful elegant women like Sofia Loren or Nicole Kidman

UZURI
How do you put your chosen colors together?

Haytham
I love nature and look for the colors of flowers, the sea, and the blues of the sky even rainbows give me ideas.

UZURI
Why did you decide to leave Tunisia and move to Kuwait?

Haytham
Well I felt that I would have more creative freedom as the market in evening wear was much more open to innovation of fashion and I could just let my imagination rip - I experiment with cuts and patterns making it a challenging experience. I’ve now been living in Kuwait for the past ten years and eventually I opened my own boutique under the trade mark Angelo

What do you most enjoy about designing clothes?

Haytham
I really enjoy dressing people. I like working with the fabric on a body. I actually feel I am painting on a canvas using my embroidering and bead work to create a unique dress for my clients.

UZURI
When you create something, what goes through your mind?

Haytham
Always the women who will be wearing the dress, I want her to feel like an elegant Diva…full of Grace

UZURI
Who are your clients?

Haytham
Well I can’t disclose names, but mainly Middle Eastern Royalty and actresses. I work mainly with private clients and I have trained myself four designers to work with me in my workshop.

UZURI
What is your next dream?

Haytham
I would love to dress an actress for the Oscars; the right woman in the right dress would be the perfect dream. I am a perfectionist and I work hard, and I do believe that we can follow our dreams and who knows when I will meet that little angel to fly me to LA?

UZURI
We believe that she's listening to you right now.

It has been a pleasure speaking with you.
