Korto Momolu - Big 'Projects' on Her Agenda

Whether you remember her confident use of color, her flawless design aesthetic or her unique name, you cannot forget Project Runway’s Season 5 first runner-up, Korto Momolu.  The anticipation for her Mercedes Benz Fashion Week return is finally over.

Korto has collaborated with Dilliards to present her accessories line and the nationwide launch begins on February 15, during the Fashion Olympics.

She has presented collections at LA Fashion Week, Boston Fashion Week and of course, New York Fashion Week which she calls, “the epidemy of all fashion weeks.”  Korto is an artist:  clothing designer, seamstress, stylist, jewelry creator, assessory engineer, wife and mother.  Ultimately, she is an inventor of elegance with an edge.

She calls her signature style, “Funky-Classic,” even through Project Runway’s Super stylist/Mentor, Tim Gunn’s signature grimaces.  “Tim used to hate me to use that word,” says Korto.  “Funky, means unusual, but cute and classic, because I don’t follow trends,”   yet the industry followed a few Korto Momolu trends from her spring 2009 Collection.  Many of the aqua, teal, mimosa hues and embellished sleeves and tailored waist styles were featured in Korto’s Project Runway finale collection.  Then were sprinkled and duplicated throughout the Fall Fashion Season.  “The things I did in my collection were what felt true in my heart and they just happen to be in now,” says Korto.  “Color makes your skin glow,” she says, describing her relationship with color.  Another specialty of Korto is in her ability to design for real size women.  “I’m not a size 2 or 4, but I have found the beauty in who I am,” she adds that real size women have been neglected in fashion. “Many full size women don’t wear designer clothing because they see garments presented that everyday people can’t wear.”  Korto’s core mannequin dimension is a size 8.   She presents at least one plus size design in every show to give real women the opportunity to physically see themselves in her garments.

Korto is a treasure and her creativity will fit any of the world’s fashion capitols like a pair of Michael Antonio stilettos.  She was born in Liberia with pit stops in Canada, New York and Atlanta.  She currently resides in Little Rock and the city is appreciative of the fortune it holds in resident Korto Momolu.  November 13, 2009 marked the second annual celebration of Korto Momolu-Briggs Day with city-wide trunk shows, signings and viewings in Little Rock centered around the Project Runway Season 5 Fan Favorite.

Korto has an ability to adapt to different environments, which she attributes to moving around as a child.  “Knowing people from different places, opens your mind.”  Korto was born in Liberia, but her family moved because of war.  She plans to return for her first visit in 20 years now that the war is over and the economy is improving.  Korto seems to comfortably adjust to changes in her life, similar to her approach to the quick challenges and the distance from family (husband and daughter, Alyse (5) Project Runway required.  She’s a real person, with a real life and she REALLY works.  “I drop my daughter off at school and come back home and work,” says Korto who is draping a dress for a photo shoot as we speak.  “When she gets home, I try not to work and when my husband gets off of work, he needs his time too.”  She says it’s tough to juggle family and work, “But it’s what I have to do to get my work out, always on the grind.”    Yet, she’s not without her fashion critics.  “She knows what she wants to wear and what she doesn’t want to wear,” says Korto about Alyse, who loves to sing, dance and even sketches and drapes with mommy.  “She has her own sense of style that I didn’t have until my 20s.”

Korto’s current style consists of beading and lovely cocktail, evening dresses.  “My style continues to change as I get older,” says Korto, who is working on a t-shirt line with a women-owned and operated co-op program in Liberia.  Her accomplishments continue to grow and she continues to strive to fertilize her brand.  Yet she appreciates the Project Runway accomplishment as a headliner for her work.  “Even though I went on confident, I was still scared out of my mind and I’m glad I faced that fear head on, I would do it again,” says Korto, who feels the sky is the limit after such a feat.  “Once people love your style it’s easy to move from clothes, to jewelry, to handbags and to home,” says Korto.  “I can be like the African-American Martha Stewart, without the jail time.”
